For the first time since 2019, Westfield is heading back to the sectional championship.
In a scrappy semifinal matchup on the road, the Blue Devils took down Woodbridge, 8–4, behind early offensive bursts and a gritty pitching performance from senior Grant Como. It wasn’t always clean, but it was plenty effective.
The game started off with chaos. Leadoff hitter Jake Alfano walked, stole two bases, and scored, setting the tone for a four-run top of the first for Westfield. The Blue Devils capitalized on wild pitching, hit batters, and timely knocks, including an RBI single from Braedan Trajkovski and a four-RBI night from Pete Cabrales.
Woodbridge answered right back with two of their own in the bottom half, including a ground-rule double by Michael Gurovich to cut the deficit in half. In the second inning, Westfield went back to work. Jordan Walsh knocked in a run, and Cabrales continued his damage with a two-run single to push the lead to 7–2.
But the Barrons wouldn’t go away. Ryan Leach drove in another run in the second, and Gurovich’s second RBI made it 7–4. That would be the final punch from Woodbridge’s offense as Como began to settle in. “Early on I didn’t have my best stuff,” Como said after the game. “I made some adjustments, started hitting my spots low in the zone, and tried to give the team a chance.”
Como did exactly that. After giving up four runs through two innings, he blanked Woodbridge the rest of the way, finishing with 6.2 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, five strikeouts, and just one walk. James Statler came in to secure the final out.
The win moves Westfield (18–6) into the North 2, Group 4 title game—an opportunity they’ve been grinding toward all spring. “We’re a family,” Como added. “Our coaches preach sticking together and we believe we can make a run not just at sectionals, but to a state final.”
With confidence growing and momentum rolling, the Blue Devils are just one win away from a sectional crown.
