Tyeler Hagensen Secures 113 LB. State Title and Perfect Season for Mount Olive

In the dynamic world of high school wrestling, Tyeler Hagensen of Mount Olive stands tall as the newly crowned 113-pound state champion, capping off an incredible undefeated season. His final victory over Jonathan McGinty of St. Joe's Regional was a testament to his skill, poise, and determination to maintain a perfect record.

Hagensen's journey through the state tournament was marked by strategic victories, each one a stepping stone towards the ultimate goal. Starting with a decisive pin against Derek Sutphen and following up with consistent wins by decision over Colton Hagerty and Matthew Gould, Hagensen showed a variety of skills that make a state champion.

The semifinals saw a close contest with Paul Kenny, where Hagensen edged out a victory with a 4-3 decision, setting the stage for the championship match.

Against McGinty, the first period was a tactical chess match, with both wrestlers testing the waters but ending scoreless. The second period began with Hagensen on the bottom, from where he made an immediate escape and launched into an outside single, taking McGinty down for two points. McGinty managed an escape, but Hagensen maintained the lead with a score of 3-1.

In the final period, Hagensen quickly let McGinty up, confident in his neutral wrestling ability. As McGinty pressed with a high-crotch attempt, Hagensen's defense was impenetrable. The closing moments of the match saw McGinty in pursuit, but Hagensen's savvy allowed him to capitalize on a desperate shot by McGinty, securing a takedown and clinching the match with a 5-2 victory.

Tyeler Hagensen's championship performance was a showcase not just of individual talent but also of the strength of public school wrestling, as he stood as one of only three public school winners of the day. His perfect season is a narrative of unwavering excellence, and as he looks forward to his future on the mats, Hagensen has already carved out a legacy as one of the best in New Jersey's wrestling history.
