Toms River South delivered a dominant performance to defeat cross-town rival Toms River East 40-28 in the South Jersey Group 4 Sectional Finals, securing the sectional championship. The Indians set the tone early with a strong showing in the middleweights and never looked back, holding off a late surge from East to claim the victory.
The Indians took control from the opening whistle, winning six straight matches to build a commanding 26-0 lead.
- Aiden Hanlon (144) opened the night with a pin at 2:54, setting the momentum in motion.
- Jake Gallagher (150) followed suit, securing a pin in 3:38.
- Jeffrey Hare (157) and Finn Devrous (175) dominated with major decisions, adding crucial bonus points to the scoreboard.
- Caden Langan (165) delivered the fastest fall of the night, pinning his opponent in just 31 seconds.
At the halfway point, Toms River South had complete control, leading 26-0.
Toms River East found some life in the upper weights, starting with Terrence Thomas (190), who secured an 8-3 decision to get his team on the board.
- Brett Rankin (215) answered for South with an 11-3 major decision, but East responded with four straight wins:
- James Lynch (285) pinned his opponent in just 46 seconds, cutting into the lead.
- Richard DeLorenzo II (120) followed with a pin at 0:34, giving East hope for a comeback.
- Kevin Sickler (126) edged out a 4-3 decision to bring the match within reach at 34-22
- Jayce Cappello (132) secured a pin over Ian Torres in the 1st period, giving the Raiders a chance to make an extraordinary comeback
Despite East’s late push, Owen Beneciuk (138) sealed the win for South, securing first-period falls to clinch the sectional title.
With their 40-28 victory, Toms River South claims the South Jersey Group 4 championship, a testament to their balanced lineup and ability to capitalize in key moments.
With momentum on their side, the Indians will now shift their focus to the Group 4 tournament, where they’ll look to continue their strong season against North Hunterdon. If their performance in the sectional final is any indication, they’ll be a tough team to beat moving forward.
