Three Interceptions, a Goal Line Stand, and a 41-Yard Field Goal: St. Joe's Regional Downs Bergen Catholic
Number three against number five in New Jersey, both teams sitting at 4-4 with playoff seeding on the line, and the result was exactly the kind of game that record suggests. Tense, physical, and decided by inches in the final two minutes. St. Joseph Montvale came out with a 10–7 win over Bergen Catholic on Saturday afternoon, and the Green Knights defense was the reason why.
The first quarter was all defense, both units setting an aggressive tone and keeping the scoreboard dark. Bergen Catholic marched right down the field on the opening drive, moving to the four-yard line before the Green Knights forced Trey Tagliaferri into a red zone interception by Ryan Barry at the one. It was a tone-setting moment that announced exactly what kind of afternoon this was going to be. Tagliaferri continued to attack downfield in the first quarter and a deep shot to his receivers was broken up by Naseer Snead. Neither team had scored and both defenses were winning.
Freshman quarterback William Mitchell broke the deadlock in the second quarter. Working into Bergen Catholic territory, he faked the handoff and found Stalin Knowlden open on a play action for a 42-yard touchdown. Just like that, St. Joe's led 7–0. Bergen Catholic answered with another red zone push but Tagliaferri threw his second interception of the game, this one grabbed by Jonathan Galette returning from injury. Then a third pick before halftime, this one by Tahj Gray, made it three red zone turnovers in the first half for the Green Knights secondary. St. Joe's went into the locker room with a 7–0 lead they had done absolutely everything to earn.
Bergen Catholic found life in the third quarter through special teams. A blocked punt gave the Crusaders the ball at the 22-yard line and Tagliaferri made them pay, finding Anthony Willis in the corner of the end zone on a seven-yard touchdown. Willis made a one-handed catch in tight coverage that was one of the best individual plays of the regular season in New Jersey football. Just like that it was 7–7 and Bergen Catholic had all the momentum.
St. Joe's flipped the script right back. Ralph Tristani came in at quarterback and hit Knowlden again on a 42-yard gain on the final play of the third quarter, putting the Green Knights in scoring position heading into the fourth. Kyle Salinas then drilled a 41-yard field goal to put St. Joe's up 10–7. The lead felt fragile but the defense had already proven it could protect one.
Bergen Catholic drove into Green Knights territory late in the fourth with a chance to take the lead. On fourth down, Cameron Aime hauled Tagliaferri down for a sack to end the threat and give St. Joe's the ball. The Green Knights then drove to the two-yard line with under two minutes left, looking to put the game out of reach. Penalties and a goal line stand by the Bergen Catholic defense pushed them back and a quarterback sneak on fourth and less than a yard came up short. Bergen took over at their own half-yard line with 2:02 remaining needing to go 99 yards.
Tagliaferri moved them. Willis made another big catch on the drive to get the Crusaders to their own 45 with 1:15 to go. But Ted Harris brought Tagliaferri down for a sack, Bergen burned its final timeout, and Chris Badon came up with the stop on fourth down to seal it. St. Joe's wins 10–7.
Tagliaferri finished 18-of-34 for 205 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Willis was spectacular on a personal level with four catches for 71 yards and two plays that will be replayed for a long time. Mitchell went 11-of-16 for 172 yards and the game's first touchdown. Both teams are now 4-4 heading into the final week of the regular season with Non-Public A playoff seeding still very much unsettled. This one will mean something when the bracket comes out.
