In one of the biggest upsets of the New Jersey baseball season so far, St. Peter’s Prep delivered a statement victory, taking down powerhouse No. 2 Don Bosco Prep in a thrilling 1-0 win on Saturday evening. The Ironmen suffered their first loss just a day ago against Delbarton and looked to get back on track against the Marauders. The St. Peter's Prep team had other plans.
The game was a pure pitcher’s duel from start to finish, with both teams combining for 19 total strikeouts. In the middle of it all was junior right-hander Logan Chi, who turned in a masterful performance on the mound.
Chi went the distance, throwing seven innings of two-hit, shutout baseball, while striking out nine and walking none. His performance was the difference-maker as St. Peter’s capitalized on a crucial RBI single from Axel Martinez to bring home the game’s only run in the fourth inning.
Chi broke down his performance after the win, sharing that his ability to mix his pitches and stay locked in was key. “Yesterday I was able to find my secondary pitches and locate in the zone,” Chi said. “Being able to stay in a groove was a big part to keeping composure and trusting my defense behind me.”
Despite going up against one of the deepest and most talented lineups in the state, Chi never flinched. His command and confidence on the mound helped St. Peter’s make all the difference in a razor-tight matchup.
The energy from the Marauders’ dugout was electric after the final out. After starting the year under the radar, a win over Don Bosco sends a clear message about the potential of this St. Peter’s Prep squad. “A win like this just shows that if we play together and play a perfect ballgame that we are capable of doing damage,” Chi said. “I look forward to continuing to go out on the bump and do what I do.”
St. Peter’s Prep improves to 10-4 on the year and continues to build momentum in the HCIAL-American division. With Chi leading the pitching staff and the offense showing timely production, the Marauders proved they are a team to watch heading into May.
