SJV Tops Donovan Catholic for Shore Conference Crown

This was the matchup New Jersey softball had circled all season. Two powerhouse programs, meeting for the third time in four years on the Shore Conference's biggest stage, with revenge, redemption, and a title all on the line. By the time the final out was recorded at Count Basie Center on Thursday evening, St. John Vianney had answered every question anyone had about this team. The Lancers are your 2026 Shore Conference champions, and they earned it.

The first two innings were scoreless and tense, both pitching staffs setting the tone for what would be a classic low-scoring final. Donovan Catholic struck first in the third when Caroline Kopp ripped an RBI triple to give the Griffins a 1–0 lead. For a team that had just handed Donovan their only loss of the season a week earlier, it felt like SJV might be in for a battle. The Lancers had the answer ready. Liv Haslacher came through with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the third to flip the lead, McDougall went on to drive another run in and by the end of the fourth St. John Vianney held a 3–1 advantage.

Donovan kept fighting through five innings but couldn't solve Madison McDougall in the circle. The senior was dominant all afternoon, mixing her pitches and keeping the Griffins off balance en route to 12 strikeouts on the day. Every time Donovan threatened, McDougall found a way to get the punchout she needed.

With the score 3–1 heading into the sixth, McDougall stepped to the plate and showed off her offensive side. She launched her 25th career home run to left field, a laser that drove in her sister Peyton, who had reached base batting ninth in the lineup. A sister scoring a sister on a home run in a conference final. It was the kind of moment that gets remembered long after the season is over. The two-run shot pushed the lead to 5–1 and put the game firmly out of reach.

McDougall then went back to the circle in the seventh and closed it out the way she had pitched all day, recording the final strikeout to seal the championship. It was a complete performance from start to finish from one of the best players in the state.

After the game, SJV head coach Lombardi spoke on what this win means after Donovan ended their postseason run a year ago. "It's awesome, it feels good," she said. "But I gotta be honest, they are such a talented team themselves that we knew coming into the game it wasn't gonna be an easy win". The Lancers have a roster built for exactly this kind of moment, with experienced seniors leading the way and a group of freshmen that have contributed all season long. Coach Lombardi made clear that the trust runs all the way through the lineup. "We have nice leaders in Gabby, Madison, Mia, and Bryn, and then our four freshmen in the lineup did an outstanding job today," she said. "Getting a win like this going into states is definitely gonna pump us up and show us that we can believe in ourselves and get the job done."

The family element of this win wasn't lost on anyone who witnessed it. Lombardi coaches her daughter every day, and she speaks about it with a pride that goes beyond the scoreboard. "Not only am I blessed to have her as a leader, she's also my daughter," she said. "She's a leader pitching-wise and offensively. And then having Gabby and her together these four years has been like a blessing. Watching Gabby make plays is unreal. I get goosebumps. The two of them together, it's just been a pleasure to coach them. They're dominant together."

St. John Vianney improves to 25-0 and heads into the state playoffs as one of the most dangerous teams in New Jersey. Donovan Catholic falls to 25-2 but remains a program fully capable of making noise in the postseason. Last year the Griffins eliminated SJV in the sectional finals before winning it all. This year the script flipped in the Shore Conference final. The next chapter gets written in states, and with Madison McDougall dealing in the circle and a roster full of players who believe in each other from one through nine, the Lancers are set up to make a very long run.
