Predictions for the 2025 Wrestling Group Championships
The New Jersey high school wrestling season is nearing its peak, with the best teams in the state battling for supremacy in the Group Championships. This Sunday at Rutgers, seven teams will leave as state champions after navigating one of the most grueling tournaments in the country. After analyzing each bracket, here are our predictions for which teams will hoist the trophy in their respective groups.
Group 1: Delaware Valley
Delaware Valley has been on a mission all season, and they’re primed to finish the job in Group 1. Their depth across multiple weight classes and a tough schedule have prepared them for this moment. With a mix of seasoned upperclassmen and rising young talent, Del Val has the firepower to outlast their competition and claim the state title.
Key Wins: Bridgewater-Raritan, Caldwell, Ridge
X-Factors: Jaden Perez(138), Jackson Bush(150)
Group 2: Rumson-Fair Haven
Rumson-Fair Haven is no stranger to big matches, and they’ve proven time and time again they can win when it matters most. Their ability to secure bonus points in key bouts will be a major factor in their championship push. With a lineup that proves to be one of the best teams in program history, RFH is in a great position to bring home the Group 2 title.
Key Wins: Brick Memorial, St. John Vianney, Phillipsburg
X-Factors: Eamon Fry(113), Mario Del Vecchio(138), Sonny Amato(150) Cole Pangborn(165), Conor Delaney(215), Matt Smith(285)
Group 3: Delsea
Delsea has been a powerhouse in Group 3 for years, and this season is no different. Their lineup features some of the best wrestlers in the state, and they’ve dominated opponents with their relentless style. Their experience in high-pressure matches should give them the edge as they look to 4-peat and add to their storied history.
Key Wins: St. Joseph Metuchen, Wayne Valley, North Hunterdon
X-Factors: Greyson Pettit(113), Amari Vann(120), Gage Summers(126), Jamar Dixon(144), Riley Boos(157), Sal Marchese(215)
Group 4: Phillipsburg
Few programs in New Jersey wrestling history have the championship pedigree of Phillipsburg, and once again, the Stateliners are in a prime position to take home the Group 4 crown. Their balance of strong lower weights and dominant upper weights makes them a tough out for any opponent. With their signature grit and toughness, Phillipsburg is looking to add to their many state championships, which will be their first since 2022.
Key Wins: Mount Olive, Cranford, Delaware Valley
X-Factors: Luke Geleta(144), Gavin Hawk(157)
Group 5: Southern
Southern has been one of the most complete teams in the state this season, and they’ve consistently proven they can handle the biggest moments. Their depth and ability to control matches from start to finish will make them difficult to beat. Expect Southern to rise to the occasion and take home the Group 5 title.
Key Wins: Mount Olive, Brick Memorial, North Hunterdon
X-Factors: Cade Collins(106), Anthony Mason(113), Bryce Manera(132), Scottie Sari(138), Wyatt Stout(157), Hayden Hochstrasser(175),
Non-Public A: Delbarton
Delbarton has been the best team in all of New Jersey all season, and nothing suggests that will change in the Group Finals. Their lineup is stacked with state-caliber wrestlers at nearly every weight, and their ability to score big points in bunches sets them apart. Although St. Joe's Regional is a more than worthy adversary, expect Delbarton to show off their firepower and secure yet another state title.
Key Wins: Blair, St. Peter's Prep, St. John Vianney
X-factors: Cameron Sontz(113), Tommy Marchetti(120), Ryan DeGeorge(132), Chase Quenault(138), Jayden James(150), Alessio Perentin(165), Carl Betz(190)
Non-Public B: Camden Catholic
Camden Catholic is no stranger to success, and this year they are primed to capture another state title. Their lineup is well-balanced, with wrestlers capable of picking up crucial wins in close matches. With a strong tradition of postseason excellence, Camden Catholic should have what it takes to emerge as the Non-Public B champion.
X-factors: Sammy Spaulding(132), Michael Craft(150), Kage Jones(157), Jaden Simpson(175)
With the Group Championships set for Sunday at Rutgers, these teams are poised to battle for ultimate bragging rights. Anything can happen on the mat, but if these squads wrestle to their full potential, expect them to leave as champions. Let’s see who rises to the occasion when it matters most!
