Plainfield Wins Rivalry Test, Outlasts Roselle Catholic in Overtime Classic

A packed gym, a familiar opponent, and a game that never settled until the final minutes. Plainfield and Roselle Catholic gave the rivalry exactly what it’s known for Tuesday night, but when the game stretched into overtime, it was Plainfield that found another gear and pulled away for a 71–63 win over Roselle Catholic.
From the opening tip, the pace was fast and physical, with both teams trading baskets and feeding off the energy in the building. Plainfield set the tone behind Micah Gordon, who caught fire early and poured in 20 of his 31 points in the first half. Whether it was getting downhill or stepping into shots in rhythm, Gordon consistently answered Roselle Catholic runs and helped Plainfield carry momentum into the break.
Roselle Catholic never let the game get away. Balanced scoring and timely plays kept them within striking distance, and Trevon Lewis delivered one of the night’s biggest moments midway through the third quarter with a powerful dunk that brought the crowd to its feet and swung momentum back toward the hosts. The back-and-forth continued into the fourth, where neither side blinked despite the rising tension.
When regulation ended deadlocked, Plainfield leaned on its experience. Rashawn Williams asserted himself in the paint all night and saved one of his biggest shots for the biggest moment, knocking down a key three to open overtime. That basket set the tone for the extra period, as Plainfield’s defense tightened and its offense played with purpose, turning a tight contest into a controlled finish.
Williams finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds, complementing Gordon’s scoring burst and giving Plainfield the inside-out balance it needed late. As a team, Plainfield won the overtime frame 14–6, creating separation through stops, free throws, and timely execution.
After the game, Gordon pointed to preparation as the difference.
“Coming into the game we knew we had to come out from the go and give it our all,” he said. “The 20 in the first half was cool, but my main focus was our defense. Going into overtime I kept telling my team this is what we work for. The conditioning, the extra work, all of it. We’ve been in games like this our whole lives. It’s about outworking the next team every quarter, every possession.”
In a rivalry that rarely disappoints, Plainfield showed why it continues to set the standard. When the game demanded toughness, composure, and execution, they delivered — and walked out with a statement win that reinforces their place among the state’s elite.
