Phillipsburg Routes St. Joseph Metuchen in BCC Showdown

Monday afternoon football in the Big Central Conference delivered exactly what the matchup promised. Phillipsburg and St. Joseph Metuchen traded haymakers for four quarters in a game that wasn't decided until the final minutes, with the Liners ultimately pulling away for a 42–31 win to move to 4-1 on the season.

It was an ugly start for Phillipsburg. On the very first play of the game, David Pacewicz stepped in front of a St. Joe's pass and returned it 47 yards for a pick-six to put the Liners up 7–0 before the Falcons had even settled in. St. Joe's answered quickly through Julian Colon to tie it, and just like that the tone was set — this game was going to go back and forth.

St. Joe's leaned on Cole Seyler and Dillon Diaz to build a halftime advantage, and the two of them were nearly impossible to slow down through the air. Seyler finished 26-of-38 for 329 yards and two touchdowns, doing the work of a legitimate BCC-caliber quarterback from start to finish. But Diaz was the one who made the biggest plays. He hauled in nine catches for 163 yards and two scores, including a 47-yard catch-and-run in the second quarter that saw him reverse field, stiff-arm a defender, and take it all the way to the end zone. A few minutes later, he came down with an eight-yard touchdown catch to send St. Joe's into halftime up 21–14. The kid made contested catches look routine all afternoon and gave Phillipsburg's secondary fits every time he touched the ball. Nick Brust added seven catches for 129 yards as a secondary target, giving Seyler two legitimate weapons that stretched the field all game.

But Phillipsburg is built to run the football and they never stopped doing it. Shane Moore ran for 137 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Xavier Campbell-Graham added 108 yards and two scores on the ground. The Liners totaled 255 rushing yards on 36 attempts and wore St. Joe's down in the second half the way physical teams do when they commit to the identity they've built.

The game's biggest moment came from an unlikely place. Markus Jordan took a kickoff 94 yards to the house in the third quarter to flip a 24–21 deficit into a 28–24 Phillipsburg lead. This was the sophomore's first career varsity touchdown and one that completely changed the complexion of the game. St. Joe's answered with a Seyler sneak to pull within four, but the Liners went right back to work on the ground. Campbell-Graham punched it in from the one to make it 35–31, and when Phillipsburg converted a fourth-and-two late in the fourth quarter to keep the chains moving, the game was effectively over. A final Campbell-Graham score sealed it at 42–31.

Phillipsburg scored 21 points in the final 13 minutes of the game and ran the ball consistently in the fourth quarter when St. Joe's needed stops the most. That's not a coincidence — that's the character of a program that has seen fourth-quarter situations before. The Liners move to 4-1 and continue to establish themselves as one of the teams to watch in the BCC. St. Joseph Metuchen falls to 2-2 but showed enough on Monday — particularly through the Seyler-to-Diaz connection — to remain dangerous the rest of the season.
