Paul VI Lady Eagles Soar To Victory

The second part of my double header lead me to Haddon as the Paul VI Lady Eagles hosted the Red Bank Catholic Caseys. From the opening tip to the end it was all Paul VI. Red Bank Catholic’s Casey Prior got the game started off with a corner three then on the following possession Molly Kelly got a layup of hers to fall. After that, Paul VI was in control for the rest of the game. Hannah Hidalgo and crew began to restrict Red Bank in the full court press for the rest of the game which became difficult for the Caseys to break. Sara McShea got the offense going for Paul VI scoring their first 8 points including 2 three pointers.

The second quarter became the Hannah Hidalgo show as she was locking up on defense followed up by easy fast break layups. At the half it was only 21-15 but it felt much much farther apart than that. The third quarter is when things really started to spiral away from Red Bank Catholic. Hidalgo and Army-West Point commit Sara McShea began to pour it on. In the fourth things got a little tame as Eva Andrews got on the scoresheet with a three of her own while Hidalgo and McShea continued to score sporadically. When the final horn sounded Paul VI had advanced to play St. John Vianney with a 46-27 win over Red Bank Catholic.

After the game, Hannah Hidalgo credited studying film and working on Red Bank Catholic’s defensive sets in practice against the Paul VI boys basketball team for the success against a tall and talented Red Bank Catholic team. Both teams had a knack for how either team’s star player(s) played since McDonald's All-American and Tennessee Women’s Basketball commit, Justine Pissott, Boston College Commit Ally Carman, and Paul VI’s Hidalgo all play on the same AAU team together. Coach Orlando Hidalgo said that seeing those two play a lot and also studying film was the key to locking down and holding both Carman and Pissott to a combined 8 points. Coach Hidalgo says he looks forward to seeing St. John Vianney in the finals after having their previously scheduled matchup canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests.
