Paramus Catholic and Ridge take District 13 by Storm
The NJSIAA District 13 wrestling tournament concluded with Paramus Catholic standing tall as the champions, amassing a remarkable 259.0 team points, while Ridge showcased their formidable talent, finishing a strong second with 189.0 points.
Paramus Catholic's wrestlers took the tournament by storm, with champions crowned across various weight classes. The 138-pound final saw Dylan Ross secure a fall, demonstrating the technical proficiency and strength that Paramus Catholic brought to the tournament. John Zero made a statement with a major decision win at 150 pounds, and John Quinonez showed his mettle with a decisive fall at 165 pounds. Edward Terreri continued the winning streak with a quick pin at 175 pounds, and Daniel Rella showcased his dominance with a technical fall in the 190-pound class. Xavier Williams capped off the upper weights with a swift fall at 215 pounds.
Not to be outdone, Nicholas Barone at 126 pounds delivered a commanding 7-0 decision, while Nicholas Pallitto edged out a close 3-2 victory at 132 pounds to add to their team's impressive score.
Ridge, not far behind, had its share of the spotlight with Tanner Connelly clinching a 6-3 decision at 106 pounds. Despite a tough battle at 113 pounds, Ridge's Owen O`Leary fell to a major decision. However, Christopher Oliver brought pride to Ridge with a 6-2 decision victory at 285 pounds, illustrating the depth and resilience of the team.
In the battles for third place, Ridge's Ryan Yang triumphed in a grueling double-overtime match at 138 pounds, and Ryan Engle secured a pin at 144 pounds. William Corbett added to Ridge's success with a 6-4 decision at 150 pounds, and Kevin Taylor emerged victorious in an overtime thriller at 190 pounds.
In the midst of wrestling giants at the NJSIAA District 13 tournament, Arthur Johnson High School carved out a commendable third-place finish with 101.5 points. Highlighted by Zachary Belverio's masterful 18-6 major decision at 113 pounds and Joseph Ortega's strong showing in the 144-pound final, Arthur Johnson's team demonstrated that they could make a significant impact even in the shadow of larger programs. Matty Ortega and Keegan Parkhill also finished up in advancing positions with a second and third place finish on the day.
As the dust settles on District 13, competitors not only left their mark on the tournament but have also set their sights on higher goals. With the state championships on the horizon, these wrestlers will carry forward the momentum into Region 4 continue to showcase the best of New Jersey high school wrestling.
