In a commanding display of football prowess, Don Bosco Prep routed St. Augustine 35-14 in the Non-Public Group A semifinals, underscoring their championship ambitions. The Ironmen's victory was propelled by a stellar performance from their dynamic playmakers and a strategy that effectively stifled the Hermits.
The game kicked off with Don Bosco's quarterback, Deven Sisler, connecting with Isaiah Alvarez for a stunning 58-yard touchdown pass, setting the tone for the day. St. Augustine, determined not to fall behind early, responded with Julian Turney catching a 12-yard pass from Ryan Stoehr, evening the score at 7-7. However, Don Bosco’s Dante DeLuca quickly reclaimed the lead with a 1-yard touchdown run.
As the game progressed, the Ironmen’s offense continued to overwhelm the Hermits. The second quarter saw Alvarez grab another touchdown pass from Sisler, this time for 52 yards, highlighting their aerial threat. Turney, for St. Augustine, kept his team in the game with a gritty 1-yard touchdown run, keeping the halftime score a competitive 21-14.
The third quarter was all Don Bosco, as DeLuca bulldozed through for another short 3-yard touchdown run, widening the gap to 28-14. Any hope of a St. Augustine comeback was quashed in the fourth quarter when Alvarez sprinted for a 13-yard touchdown, his third of the game, cementing the final score at 35-14.
Sisler's efficient passing, completing 8 of 14 attempts for 139 yards and two touchdowns, was a key factor in Don Bosco's victory. DeLuca's power running proved too much for St. Augustine, as he racked up 115 yards on 30 carries, crossing the end zone twice. On the defensive side, the Ironmen were just as dominant, continuously pressuring the Hermits and limiting their offensive output.
St. Augustine's effort was commendable, particularly Turney, who fought hard for his two touchdowns. However, the relentless pressure from Don Bosco's defense and their explosive offensive plays were the defining elements of the game.
Don Bosco's eyes are now set on the Non-Public A championship. The Ironmen take on #1 Bergen Catholic, as they look to avenge a 24-20 early season loss.
