In a highly anticipated showdown between two of New Jersey’s top lacrosse programs, Don Bosco Prep outlasted Bergen Catholic 9-6 on Saturday night to win their fifth consecutive Bergen County championship. Played under the lights at Mahwah High School, the rivalry matchup delivered the intensity expected from two teams with title aspirations.
The Ironmen wasted no time, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter behind goals from Heston Halesworth, Brady Kushner, and Brady Scioletti. Don Bosco dominated early possessions, thanks to Scott Conte's efficiency at the X, and set the tone with physical defense and smart offensive sets.
Bergen Catholic clawed back into the game in the second quarter, scoring two quick goals to close the gap, but Kushner and Scioletti each struck again to maintain a 5-3 lead at halftime. The third quarter featured wild momentum swings as BC scored two goals in just 24 seconds to tie the game at 5, but Don Bosco answered with a three-goal burst of their own, highlighted by John Devir’s go-ahead goal and a big-time finish from defensive midfielder Aidan Kang.
In the fourth, Don Bosco locked in defensively while Kushner completed his hat trick, giving the Ironmen the cushion they needed to close out the win. It was a complete performance across all phases of the game, with goalie play, faceoff control, and clutch scoring all contributing to the victory.
For junior attackman Brady Kushner, who finished with three goals, the night carried special meaning. “Being a key part to this team really means a lot,” Kushner said. “This team is very talented and to contribute in ways where I can put my team in good spots really means a lot. Adding another county title to the program contributes to the legacy here because it shows how dedication and hard work pays off — and it really comes from Coach Lane and the rest of the staff always pushing us to be the best we can.”
Looking ahead, the Ironmen are laser-focused as the state tournament approaches. “Heading into the playoffs, something I look forward to is competing in important games with this special group of guys,” Kushner added. “Something we do to stay focused is giving 100% all the time in everything we do — whether it’s on the field or in the weight room or watching film, we always aim to give our best effort.”
With another county trophy in hand and momentum on their side, Don Bosco readies for the postseason looking every bit like a team ready to make another run at a title.
