In a game that was nothing short of a roller-coaster, Delbarton demonstrated why they are one of the top teams in the state, executing a stunning comeback in the late innings to overcome Don Bosco Prep in the North Jersey Non-Public A final.
The first inning saw Don Bosco capitalize on Delbarton's initial uncertainties, scoring three runs to take an early lead. Responding in kind, Delbarton managed to score one run, but Don Bosco continued their aggressive play, extending their lead to 7-4 by the end of the second inning.
The game seemed to stabilize for the next two innings as both teams' defenses tightened. Delbarton's pitchers found their rhythm, managing to hold Don Bosco at bay. In the top of the fifth, Delbarton sparked hope with two runs, cutting the lead to 7-6 and setting the stage for a dramatic sixth inning.
Delbarton's breakthrough came in the sixth inning. Sal Garcia ignited the comeback with an RBI single that tied the game at 7-7. Moments later, Miles Handy delivered a critical triple to right field, driving in two runs to give Delbarton a 9-7 lead. This not only shifted the momentum but also showcased Delbarton's resilience. Danny Haggard further extended the lead with a squeeze bunt that drove in another run, cementing a 10-7 advantage.
The final test came as Don Bosco attempted to rally back, but Delbarton's defense stood strong, preventing any further runs. The seventh inning saw Delbarton's pitcher, Christian Zebrowski, secure the last outs, effectively sealing the victory and the championship title.
As Delbarton now prepares for the state championship game against St. Augustine, they carry with them not just the thrill of a comeback victory but also the confidence that they can handle pressure and adversity. This win sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting championship match.
