Delbarton lacrosse pulled off one of the most impressive wins of the season, knocking off national No. 2 St. Anthony's (NY), 12-11, in a dramatic double-overtime showdown at Delbarton School on Tuesday afternoon.
Early on, it appeared St. Anthony’s would live up to their lofty ranking. The Friars opened the game with four quick goals, dominating the first quarter 4-1. They maintained control through halftime, entering the break with a 7-3 advantage, as Delbarton struggled to convert offensive possessions into points.
But the Green Wave roared back after halftime, exploding for six third-quarter goals to seize momentum and narrow the gap. Senior Gavin Romweber (1 goal, 2 assists) and junior Brandon Fodor (3 goals) led the charge, igniting the Delbarton offense as they erased the deficit and took their first lead, 9-8, on an electric goal from Duke commit Will Pedicano. The long-stick midfielder scooped up a ground ball off a face-off and swiftly converted it into a score, putting Delbarton ahead for the first time.
As the teams battled into the fourth quarter, the intensity ramped up. St. Anthony’s clawed their way back, eventually tying the game 11-11 in the final minutes. Both defenses clamped down, sending the game into overtime. After a scoreless first OT period, Delbarton found its hero: senior midfielder Alex Schobel.
Schobel received a precise pass from and buried the ball into the net from 10 yards out, delivering the dramatic 12-11 victory in the second overtime. The Green Wave bench erupted in celebration, marking their second victory this season over a nationally-ranked opponent.
Following the win, coach spoke about the team’s mindset: “Our mindset was our mindset—stick to how we play and stick to the principles. We weren't going to let them slow us down in transition. Practice hard, play hard, and nothing changes.”.
This remarkable victory propels Delbarton (4-1) further into the national spotlight and serves as a signature win that could shape their postseason aspirations moving forward.
