Bergen Catholic Clings to Victory in 80th Rivalry Game Against Don Bosco Prep
At the heart of New Jersey high school football, the rivalry between Bergen Catholic and Don Bosco Prep is always a highlight. This year's game did not disappoint, with Bergen Catholic securing a narrow victory in a match that lived up to the hype.
The day started with promise at Oradell, setting the stage for the 80th clash between these rivals. Don Bosco won the toss and opted to defer, giving Bergen Catholic the first opportunity with the ball. The teams traded defensive blows early on, with each squad showcasing why they're considered among the elite in the state. The first breakthrough came from Bergen Catholic as Dominic Campanile connected with Dante Kain for a 1-yard touchdown pass, and Guytano Bartolomeo’s successful kick gave the Crusaders a 7-0 lead. Don Bosco Prep responded robustly in the second quarter with Dante DeLuca powering through for a 3-yard touchdown run. Jack Donnelly’s kick leveled the score at 7-7, setting up a tense continuation as the half concluded.
The third quarter was a rollercoaster, beginning with Bergen Catholic’s Benjamin Carey returning a fumble for a 16-yard touchdown, pushing Bergen ahead once again. However, DeLuca was not done, responding with a 4-yard touchdown run for Don Bosco to tie the game at 14-14. The Crusaders took the lead again when Bryan Porter caught a 22-yard pass from Campanile, making it 21-14.
In the final quarter, Bergen Catholic extended their lead with a 41-yard field goal from Bartolomeo. Don Bosco Prep tried to rally back with Isaiah Alvarez catching a 12-yard pass from Dylan Wrona, but the blocked extra point attempt kept them at 20 points. As the final two minutes approaced, Don Bosco needed to do something big, and they did just that as the lined up for an onside kick and successfully recovered. However, they were not able to find any momentum which led to a trick play that was intercepted by Naiim Parrish, his second on the day. With the ball in the Crusaders hand, this game was officially over.
