Bayonne's Balanced Attack Propels Them to Semis
The game opened with Bayonne High School setting a relentless pace. Their strategy was clear from the tip-off: push the pace and play uncompromising defense. The Lady Bees executed this to perfection, as they swarmed Franklin’s offense, disrupting passes and racking up steals. With a powerful inside game leading to 21 points in the paint, Bayonne established early dominance, closing the first quarter with a commanding 15-6 lead.
Bayonne continued to build on their momentum as they entered the second quarter. The offensive duo of Janaya Meyers and Giselle Davis came to life, contributing significant buckets that kept the scoreboard ticking. Meyers, with her agility and sharp playmaking and Giselle Davis' scoring overwhelmed Franklin. Their combined effort helped Bayonne put up another 21 points in at the end of the half.
Franklin High started the second half with a glimmer of hope, sinking some early baskets in an attempt to chip away at the lead. However, Bayonne was quick to extinguish any sparks of a comeback. They tightened their defense even further, proving that their first-half performance was no fluke. With Bayonne in full control, it seemed the Bees were ready to celebrate a victory. McKenzie Neal was a threat on the offensive side and defensive side as she took advantage of any mismatch in the paint and displayed her toughness on the glass. The game concluded with Bayonne advancing triumphantly to the next round with a final score of 57-46.
Bayonne's performance was spearheaded by standout contributions from a well rounded starting five. Meyers put up an impressive all-around performance with 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, showcasing her versatility on the court. Davis led the scoring with 17 points and added 6 rebounds, making her presence felt on both ends of the floor. Neal finished with 15 points and Ailani Dasher had 8. The freshman, Taleiyah Smith also played her role really well and made some key plays despite the numbers in the stat book. Bayonne will go on to Hillsborough in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 sectional semi-finals where they will be put to the test.
