#2 St. Peter's Prep Dominates St. Augustine to Advance in State Tournament
coverage by: Marco Morales
No. 2 St. Peter’s Prep left no doubt in their Non-Public A quarterfinal matchup, rolling past No. 12 St. Augustine 61-17 in a dominant performance. The Marauders controlled the dual from the opening whistle, securing bonus points in nearly every contested match and proving why they are among the top teams in the state.
St. Augustine, fresh off a solid win over Don Bosco, looked to keep their postseason run alive, but St. Peter’s never gave them a chance to gain momentum. The Marauders took 11 of 14 bouts, including six pins, two forfeits, and two technical falls, making quick work of their opponent to advance.
Marauders Set the Tone Early
The lower weights wasted no time putting St. Peter’s in control.
- John Barron (120) opened with a 14-1 major decision, setting the pace for the match.
- Salvatore Borrometi (126) and Laudan Henry (144) picked up forfeit victories, adding easy points to the Marauders' total.
- Giovanni Schinina (132) and Joseph Ruiz (150) recorded first-period pins, pushing the lead to 33-0 before St. Augustine could respond.
The Marauders continued to rack up falls and bonus points.
- Maxwell Nevlin (157) pinned his opponent in just 27 seconds, putting an exclamation mark on the Marauders' dominance.
- Anthony Verdi (175) and Carmen Marano (215) also scored first-period falls, making sure there was no room for a comeback.
Despite the lopsided score, Ron Kraus (190) provided a bright spot for St. Augustine, securing a 15-0 technical fall over Julian Contreras, but by that point the match was well out of reach.
With this victory, St. Peter’s Prep advances to the Non-Public A semifinals, where they’ll look to continue their dominant postseason run against the winner of CBA and St. Joseph Regional. The Marauders have been one of the top teams in New Jersey all season, and this performance only reinforced that reputation.
We got a chance to catch up with coach after the match:
"The guys came out aggressive and handled business from the start. We’re wrestling with a lot of confidence right now, but the job isn’t finished. We know the next round is going to be even tougher, so we have to stay focused and keep pushing forward.”
